PATRONAGE AND OWNERS – The Bible was commissioned by Charles II, called the Bald (823-877). On Christmas Eve of 875, on the occasion of his coronation as emperor, Charles II – who had excellent relations with the pontifical authority – gave the Bible to Pope John VIII. In the 12th century Pope Gregory VII, for security reasons, consigned the Bible to the monks of the Abbey of Saint Paul Outside the Walls.
